Recycle Your Candle Jars

Giving your candle vessel a second life

A simple guide to gently clean and repurpose your empty jar with care and intention.

How to Clean Out Candle Jars (Freezer Method):

  • Break up the wax at the bottom of the jar using a butter knife if possible this makes it easier to remove once frozen. (Skip this step for metal tins.)

  • Place the jar in the freezer for a few hours or until the wax is completely frozen.

  • Remove from the freezer and gently pop out the wax using a butter knife if needed. It should loosen easily.

  • Peel off the labels and warning stickers, then clean off any sticky residue with rubbing alcohol or Goo Gone.

  • Wash thoroughly with hot, soapy water or pop it in the dishwasher and you're done! Your jar is now ready to reuse or recycle.

Boiling Water Method to Clean Candle Jars

  • Protect your surface with a heat-safe mat. Scrape out as much wax as possible with a butter knife or spoon.

  • Boil water and carefully pour enough into the jar to cover leftover wax. Let it cool the wax will harden on top.

  • Scoop out the hardened wax and pour out the water. Repeat if needed until all wax is gone.

  • Remove the metal wick tab and peel off labels. Use rubbing alcohol or Goo Gone to remove residue.

  • Wash the jar with hot, soapy water or in the dishwasher. Ready to recycle or reuse!

TIP: Use leftover wax in a wax Melter for fragrance.

CAUTION: The jar and water will be hot. Protect hands and surfaces.

Advanced Oven Method for Cleaning Multiple Candle Containers

Note: This method can be quite fragrant and may leave a lingering scent in your oven that will dissipate.

  • Preheat your oven to its lowest setting (usually around 170°F).

  • Line a rimmed baking pan with aluminum foil to catch any wax drips.

  • Place the candle vessels on the pan and put it in the oven. After 15 minutes, check if the wax has melted. Wax typically melts in 15–20 minutes; check every 5–10 minutes until fully melted.

  • Using oven mitts, carefully remove the pan and place it on a heat-safe surface. While containers and wax are still hot and liquid, discard the melted wax. Thoroughly wipe the inside of each container with paper towels to remove wax and the metal wick tab. Peel off labels while the vessel is warm if recycling glass or metal.

  • Wash the vessels by hand in very hot, soapy water, wearing rubber gloves to protect your hands. Use rubbing alcohol or Goo Gone to remove any leftover residue.

CAUTION: Containers will be very hot. Always protect your hands and surfaces.
